Myntra is an Indian fashion e-commerce company headquartered in Bengaluru, India. The company was established in 2007 and this a one stop for all your fashion and lifestyle needs. Myntra was started as a platform for selling personalized gift items. You might know that in May 2014, Myntra was acquired by the Indian top e-commerce platform Flipkart for 280 million USD. Also, to become the largest e-commerce platform, Myntra gained its rival Jabong.com for 70 million USD.
The Myntra logo depicts the starting letter “M” of the company’s name which includes the overlapping shades of orange and pink in it. The Myntra logo seemed normal to the people from past 13 years until one activist Naaz Patel, who is associated with an NGO known as Avesta Foundation filed a complaint with the Mumbai Cyber police in December last year. According to her, she find the logo “obscene” and alleged that the logo and its colors “depicts a naked woman”. The activist found this logo to be offensive to women. The social media also started supporting this and started trolling the logo as “indecent and denigrating to women”.
When the police approached Myntra for an explanation, instead of justifying the side of the story they agreed to do the required and make the logo more “less obscene”. Though the difference in the logo in not much according to the layman point of view, this cost them handsome sum of money not only for changing the logo on every media channel, packaging box, product labels, store fronts and other places but also the prior investments, monetary and otherwise, stands wasted.
Even when everything seems normal, some people find out something or other from everything. The point here is not to discuss what is right or wrong, but that businesses are highly affected by external forces and even when they have already anticipated everything, they might face some unexpected turns. Furthermore, the response of the business to those forces matters above all. Myntra saved itself by recognizing its position and taking corrective actions against it.
