The internationally recognized Volkswagen Group, a German automotive corporation, founded in Berlin, Germany on 28 May, 1937. It is headquartered in Wolfsburg in Germany. The company produces the most preferred cars in the world. It’s one of the biggest automobile company in the world with a net worth of approximately $500 billion US. Volkswagen is also known as the people’s car.
The first car that Volkswagen group produced was the Ferdinand Porsche and surprisingly it took only 10 months for the German inventor to build a prototype with all the desired features. A Hungarian student named Bela Barenyi designed the basic foundation of the first car. This car got its iconic name from The New York Times and then was known as “Beetle”. You might have heard this name before.
What surprises me about this car is that it is the longest produced vehicle in the history. The production of this iconic car began in 1938 and it was produced for a whopping 65 years straight and finally stopped in the year 2003. This company produced 21.5 million or 21,529,464 (to be precise) Beetle cars and the last original car was assembled and immediately retired on 31 July,2003 as it resides on display at Volkswagen Auto Museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.
Have you ever thought, “Who Owns Volkswagen?”. Volkswagen is owned by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, often known as Volkswagen AG, or the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen doesn’t own VW alone, it also offers a wide range of financial services, including new vehicles financing and leasing, banking and insurance services. Not only this, Volkswagen AG is the parent company of many luxury automobile brands that might surprise you. The company is not restricted to passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Volkswagen is the parent company of the car brands from Skoda, SEAT and Audi to the most expensive car producers like Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche and Ducati.
Interesting, right! Wait, I’ll tell you more. There’s a football team sponsored by Volkswagen named Vfl Wolfsburg and it was champion in 2008-09 season for the first time. Furthermore, the company has a rule that no shareholder can own more than 20% of Volkswagen and this helps the company to be away from influence of dominant shareholders. So, even if you have billions, you can’t be the owner of Volkswagen AG.
